PARIS IS GOING CAR FREE

September 27th has been proclaimed "la journée sans voiture" - the day without cars.

For all of you in Paris at the end of the month, you will be able to enjoy an especially peaceful and unique Sunday in the city. All traffic will be suspended in major tourist centers, including the Champs Élysées, Place de la Republique, the Left Bank, Place de la Bastille and the Eiffel Tower, as well as in the 1st-7th, 10th and 11th arrondissements.

Paris has experienced some serious spikes in air pollution this past year, so this car free day is just one of the ways that the city is campaigning to reduce it's pollution. The event also coincides with European Mobility Week and the upcoming United Nations climate conference in Paris this November. The French capital already had to take emergency measures to temporarily cut back on car traffic this past March, after smog in the city became almost unbearable.

The Mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, announced that “Paris will be completely transformed for a day. This is an opportunity for Parisians and tourists to enjoy the city without noise, pollution and therefore without stress.”

And we can't wait! Finally a chance to take that perfect photo straight up the middle of the Champs Elysées. Or bike the city center without fear of a road-raging taxi driver. So much to do, so little time! Let's hope they make it an annual event.
