It's not selfish to love yourself, take care of yourself and to make your happiness a priority. It's necessary!
As we conquer the world and try to be as diligent and successful as possible, we often forget to take a step back and take care of ourselves. I want to share with you 5 simple little tips on how to practice self-care every day - to become the best version of yourself.
1. Listen to podcasts
I love listening to podcasts. It's like reading an 'educational' book without reading it. You can simply download an episode on your phone or laptop and listen to it while getting ready, cleaning the house or on transit. As I'm not the biggest bookworm*, and I’m quite a busy person, podcasts are a great alternative. My favourite Podcasts at the moment are The Influencer Podcast, Pardon My French with Garance Doré, At Home With... and Make It Happen.
* I try to get better and even set myself a little reading list I want to accomplish by the end of the year. In my latest blog post Getting healthy, again I share with you not only my list but also some other self-care and health habits I plan to practice more often.
2. Positive thinking
Not long ago I heard about The Secret. Yes, I'm probably one of the last people to stumble upon it. It is nothing entirely new to me. In fact, I used to know pretty well that when you assume something good -and believe in it just long enough, it will happen sooner or later in some form. But I guess I never really practiced this enough. One thing it suggests is to think and act about certain things you want, as if you already had them. So I started to tell myself (in my mind, otherwise my boyfriend would go crazy) every night before I fall asleep the things I do, I can, I have, I am. That's a modified form of the secret, but I feel really good after telling these things to myself and have a good night’s sleep. My point is, think positive. Because not only could it affect the universe, but it also sets yourself in a good mood.
3. Have a pampering day
Every Sunday, I'll take some time just for myself. Have a nice bath, apply a face mask, wash my hair, give myself a nice peeling and just enjoy some time off to reload my batteries. It’s as simple as this: Turn on some soft music (I prefer classic music), pour yourself a glass of your favourite wine and enjoy a soak in the bath -that's what Sundays are all about! During this time I switch my phone to airplane mode, so that I can really relax without being disturbed.
4. Try a new, healthy recipe

Self-care also includes nourishing your body with healthy food. It doesn't matter if you cook for yourself, your family or invite friends over for a nice homemade dinner. Cooking a new recipe broadens one's mind. You can find some lovely (vegan) breakfast/dessert recipes over on my blog - including these amazing vegan brownies (made by me!).
5. Go to bed early
This one isn't always easy. Maybe you have long hours at work, need to finish a project (have a deadline) or you're a mama who is needed during those late night hours. But try to find a sleep rhythm that works for you, and stick to it! Sleep is so important and when you don't get enough sleep you can feel miserable, tired and overall not happy. Between 6-8 hours is best. iPhone now has a cool feature called bedtime. You can tell your phone what time you want to go to bed and wake up and it reminds you (this comes in handy when you like to end the day with Netflix!)
What are some things you like to do to practice self-care? I would love to hear about them. Also, check out my blog for more healthy habits. Ilka x
